What is hybrid working according to an international expert?

Updated: Apr 17, 2023

As international hybrid working experts, we are often asked” What is hybrid working?”.

Hybrid working is a work style that combines working from both the office and home, giving employees the flexibility to choose where they work. Hybrid working has become increasingly popular in the UK, with many employees wanting to continue working from home at least some of the time in the post-pandemic world. According to YouGov surveys and CIPD research, 56% of UK workers would prefer a mix of office and remote working.

The Ryanair Model:

This shift has required employers to reconsider how they manage their teams. You see, there is a huge difference between arranging the practicalities such as what days to come to the office to knowing that hybrid teams need to be managed differently. Many employers think they have nailed it because they took care of the practicalities and they have a written policy.

To overcome this, it is crucial to establish clear expectations, provide training and support to managers, and encourage multi-directional trust across the organization. Employers need to become experts in the 4 pillars needed to become an exceptional hybrid employer.

- Soft skills across the organisation but in particular, in line managers. - Trust and productivity. There is a link between them and that is engagement. - Mental wellbeing. Many organisations pat themselves on the back thinking the tick box exercise of an MHFA and an EAP makes them a mental wellbeing first organisation. They need to dig just below the surface to see the reality. - Can the old office culture be replicated? The answer is yes and it's not hard. But it does need addressing, not ignoring or hoping.

The key to success is not the imposition of a plan or a strategy created by management. It is the implementation of a strategy created by everyone, guided by management.

The old days of top-down are gone. Employees are far savvier now about what they want to be happy and productive hybrid workers and employers need to cotton on to that.
